In August 1928, Bertold Brecht's Threepenny Opera premiered at the Schiffbauerdamm in Berlin. The play becomes a complete success, which prompts the author to prepare his work for a film adaptation. The composer Kurt Weill actively supports him, but her plan to film the 19th century story around the crook Macheath, who burned out with Polly, the daughter of the so-called beggar king Peachum, gets many problems.
